what makes Davids so good?
fluoride free - Davids is committed to using only safe ingredients to promote both personal & oral health. We have chosen to not include fluoride in our formulation, due to health concerns surrounding this ingredient. Every toothpaste manufacturer that includes fluoride is required to print the following warning label on their packaging:
"Keep out of reach of Children under 6 years of age. If more than used for brushing is accidentally swallowed, get medical help or contact a Poison Control Center right away."
You wont find this warning label on Davids toothpaste, since this toothpaste is fluoride-free.
sulfate free - (no sls) - Sulfate based chemicals, most commonly sodium lauryl sulfate (sls), is a chemical used by most toothpaste companies to produce the foaming action of the toothpaste. Unfortunately, sulfates can be harmful to the environment and may also be harmful to your body. Some people experience mouth sores from using traditional toothpaste with sulfates, because of the harshness of this chemical. We have substituted sls with an ingredient derived from coconuts (sodium cocoyl glutamate), which is sulfate-free.
no artificial flavors, sweeteners, colors, or preservatives - We eliminated the artificial ingredients that are found in most other toothpastes and found safe alternates. The result is a toothpaste that is naturally sweet (not too sweet), naturally flavored, and naturally preserved.
essential oil flavoring - We developed a proprietary blend of premium essential oils from various mint growing regions around the United States. These oils were blended together to create our custom mint flavoring that leaves incredibly fresh minty breath. Other companies often use artificial mint flavoring or lower grade imported mint oil. Once you try Davids toothpaste, with our custom blend of premium USA produced mint oil, you will not want to go back! (note: some of our flavor ingredients are not available/grown in the US, and have been globally sourced, however we use USA Origin ingredients whenever possible.)
not just made in usa... usa origin too (big difference) - While talking to suppliers, we discovered that many of the big toothpaste companies buy ingredients that come from overseas (mostly China, Malaysia & India), and mix them in their US factory and stamp "Made in USA" on their package. At Davids, we take a much different approach...we do our best to use only premium ingredients that are farmed, mined, and processed in the USA....98% of our ingredients are USA Origin, supporting the sustainability of the USA economy and American jobs!
sustainability....nature+america+you - Environmental sustainability is extremely important, but we take a more holistic approach. Davids is focused on sustaining the environment through the packaging we use...sustaining the USA economy and American jobs by using the highest possible content of USA origin ingredients and packaging....sustaining YOU and your health, by only using naturally sourced and derived ingredients....Nature+America+You is more than what is printed on our packaging...it is reflected in our toothpaste and everything we do.
cruelty free - Davids does not do animal testing in the development of our products. We believe all life should be valued and respected. Davids Toothpaste is a member of Leaping Bunny (www.leapingbunny.org), which is a coalition of companies dedicated to the promotion of humane animal treatment.
ingredients & purpose
calcium carbonate - Naturally sourced from the earth, our calcium carbonate is mined from a quarry in Pennsylvania and processed to meet the strictest purity standards. Calcium carbonate is used as a mild abrasive to assist with the brushing action to help reduce plaque, remove surface stains, and whiten & polish teeth.
purified water - Used to blend ingredients and give texture.
sodium bicarbonate (baking soda)- Used to neutralize the plaque forming acids in your mouth, remove surface stains, and whiten & polish teeth. Baking soda can be found as a naturally occurring compound, but is more frequently manufactured from other naturally derived materials. Baking soda can be produced by the reaction of carbon dioxide and soda ash, a naturally occurring mineral.
vegetable glycerin - Used to moisten the mouth and enhance our essential oil flavoring. Also used as a preservative to keep the paste moist and to keep the ingredients from separating. Our glycerin is naturally derived from vegetable oils which undergo advanced processing (hydrolysis) to obtain a highly pure final food grade ingredient. Glycerin can also be derived from animal fats, however, we avoid using this type of glycerin in order to stay true to our definition of natural and commitment to cruelty free.
hydrated silica - Naturally derived from silica, a common material that makes up about 12% of the earth's surface, used to help remove surface stains and whiten & polish teeth. Others often use low quality imported silica with large abrasive particles that can scratch or damage the enamel....Davids uses only the highest quality USA made hydrated silica with ultra fine microscopic particles designed to safely clean and polish the enamel on your teeth.
xylitol (birch derived)- a five-carbon sugar used as a sweetener. We use only a premium USA produced xylitol derived from birch trees, which is considered the best for both you and the environment. The birch tree fibers undergo advanced processing which creates a final product of crystalline birch xylitol which looks like sugar (altered from it's original state) but is commonly classified as a natural sweetener.
sodium cocyl glutamate - Alternative to Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS). This ingredient is derived from coconut materials after going through advanced processing, and used to create a mild foaming action which helps suspends the other ingredients while brushing, helping the cleaning and whitening process.
carrageenan- Seaweed powder. Seaweed is hand harvested from the ocean, dried, and milled to a fine powder. When we add the water and other liquids to the seaweed powder, it creates a gel paste. Without seaweed powder (carrageenan), our toothpaste would have a syrup like consistency. There has been confusion about this ingredient because there is a NON FOOD GRADE version known as degraded Carrageenan (aka poligeenan) - formerly referred to as degraded carrageenan.
mentha piperita (peppermint) oil - We use a premium domestic essential oil of peppermint naturally sourced from mint leaves. Used to give our toothpaste a natural peppermint flavor, to kill the bacteria in your mouth and freshen breath. We developed a custom blend of ultra premium, USA produced, mint oils from various mint growing regions around the US to create a one of a kind mint flavor that is amazing.
mentha viridis (spearmint) leaf oil - We use a premium domestic essential oil of spearmint naturally sourced from spearmint leaves. Used to compliment the peppermint flavor and freshen breath.
piminella anisum (anise) seed extract - Naturally sourced from the perennial herbal plant anise. Used to compliment the peppermint flavor and freshen breath.
gaultheria procumbens (wintergreen) leaf oil - We use a premium domestic essential oil of wintergreen naturally sourced from wintergreen leaves. Used to compliment the peppermint flavor and freshen breath.
Stevia (Leaf Extract) - Derived from the stevia plant. Used as a natural sweetener and to further enhance the natural mint oil flavoring.
recyclable metal tube - Each year about 1.5 Billion toothpaste tubes end up in US landfills and we wanted to do better. You may have thought we selected the metal tube for it's modern aesthetic (that was part of it), but the main reasons Davids comes in metal tubes is for maintaining maximum freshness and for their ability to be recycled. Our aluminum tubes are lined with a Food Grade Non-BPA liner so there is no paste to metal contact, and this barrier helps prevent any leaching of the tube material into the paste. For more info on how to recycle your Davids tube, read here.
FSC certified paperboard packaging - With Davids commitment to environmental sustainability, our paperboard packaging only comes from forests protected and managed by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). Because FSC is the gold standard in forest certification, it is the only system supported by groups such as WWF, Sierra Club, Greenpeace, Natural Resources Defense Council and National Wildlife Federation.
